President Donald Trump has abruptly terminated Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, issuing a directive on August 28, 2025, to cancel what was originally an extension of her detail, effective September 1, 2025. The move rescinds a measure quietly granted by President Joe Biden in January 2025 that had extended Harris’s protection to 18 months post-office rather than the standard six months allowed under federal law.

Under law, Secret Service protection for ex-vice presidents typically ends six months after they leave office. In Harris’s case, that period concluded on July 21, 2025. Biden’s unpublicized extension ensured her continued security well into the following year. Trump’s revocation even though Harris had enjoyed extra coverage comes at a moment when she is slated to begin a 15-city international book tour promoting her memoir 107 Days, recounting her 2024 presidential campaign.

The implications of the decision are being keenly felt. Harris’s senior adviser issued a statement expressing appreciation for the professionalism and dedication of the Secret Service but has raised immediate concerns about the loss of around‑the‑clock protection, including threat surveillance, communications security, and residence monitoring especially as Harris gears up for high‑profile public engagements.

California officials have voiced sharp criticism. Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass condemned the revocation as politically motivated and potentially hazardous, especially with Harris’s increased visibility on a national stage. Reports indicate that the California Highway Patrol may step in to provide security, contingent on coordination with state leadership though formal arrangements remain under deliberation.

Trump’s action is consistent with a broader pattern. He has previously removed Secret Service protection or security clearances from several political figures, including critics such as John Bolton, Joe Biden’s family members, and other Democratic officials. Observers say this underscores a willingness on Trump’s part to use security decisions in ways that align with his political retributions.

Effective September 1, Kamala Harris will no longer receive the federal safeguards once extended by Biden, a decision that has ignited broader debate about the politicization of post‑office security and the protocols that determine who receives protection and under what conditions in the aftermath of serving at the highest levels of government.
